Many thanks to our judge, Adair Wilson.
| Monty | Dominic | Stove | A | Best A Grade, Champion Image | Honours |
| Kaikoura Minimalism | Nick | Hampson | B | Best B Grade | Honours |
| F18 Super Hornet | Martin | Kircher | C | Best C Grade | Honours |
| Woody | Dominic | Stove | A | Nicely isolated and framed, with excellent focus and exposure which is very suited to the subject. The light background is somewhat demanding on the eye but very nicely silhoettes the bird. Branches at bottom provide weight to the image also. Well captured. | Accepted |
| last rays of light before the storm | Cathy | Price | A | Lovely moody shot of mist rolling into the valley and the sun trying to peirce through. Road and vehicle lights create a path into and out of the image and power poles add interest along the way. Well captured. | Accepted |
| The Vanishing | Graham | Dean | A | Cleverly put together and well though through. Flat lighting keeps the viewers attention mid frame as does the light sweatshirt. | Accepted |
| My Ball | Sarah | Perrins | A | Excellent image which captures the moment and the emotion of the dog. Lovely lighting and nice neutral background. | Accepted |
| Sun Seekers | Hilary | Lakeman | A | Pin sharp and full of colour. Well cropped to avoid a bullseye. Good detail on the bee. Excellent lighting and exposure, well done. | Accepted |
| Commer truck | Allan | McGregor | A | Well spotted and captured. Good use of darkening of edges to keep focus on the truck and make it appear to peek out from the overgrowth. | Accepted |
| Quietly content | Catherine | Dalton | A | Very central location of the child in the frame but this is offset by the almost surprised look on the childs face. Perfect exposure and nice soft but also punchy lighting. Good choice of background creates balance of tones throughout the frame. | Accepted |
| Double beauty | Sarah | Perrins | A | Very pensive look on the girl with lighting to match, including the reflection works well to add additional tonal balance across the frame without distrcting from the main image. | Accepted |
| Canopy Dance | Pol | Syrett | A | Has the appearance of a ultra violet image which adds interest and creates a pathway around the central two trees due to the darker tone of the sky. Nicely framed and a pleasure to view. | Accepted |
| Tempus Fugit once more | Jan | Driscoll | A | A very competent and interesting still life. Nice light which brings out the wood tones and creates a lead in to the light and feather as well. Good choice of focus and object placement in the frame. | Accepted |
| Puddling About | Cindy | Signal | A | Lovely shot of ducklings. Droplets on them and the ripples in the water create interest as does the leaf in the water.Lovely lighting and good depth of field, also good palcement in the frame. | Accepted |
| Mystic peak | Maxine | Cooper | A | A very simple abstract image with subtle mono tones.Creates a very contempory piece of work, well done as it is incredibly difficult to create an image as simple as this that actually works. | Accepted |
| Me, myself and I. | Maxine | Cooper | A | Nice use of the zoom technique which works well woth the subject. Lovely soft brown tones in the foreground add interest. Well exposed and interesting lighting. | Accepted |
| A Hare Raising O’ffence | Cheryl | Muirson | A | Yu desrve an acceptance just for the clever title, but the image is also well though through. The black and white slightly overexposed effect works well with the mostly decayed hare. Well thought through and captured. | Accepted |
| Monty | Dominic | Stove | A | Absolutely stunning image, well captured with lovely catch lights in the eyes and excellent exposure which reveals all the detail in the feathers. | Honours |
| Three days new | Catherine | Dalton | A | Nicely captured image with good lighting and appropriate use of focus. Good choice of background to keep focus on the baby. | Honours |
| Starfish | Cathy | Price | A | Very nicely captured image with exellent lighting on the foreground to reveal detail of the star fish. Nicely framed with the background rocks and perfect amount of light to reveal detail but not be over distracting. Well done. | Honours |
| Beyond the Web of deceit | Cheryl | Muirson | A | A extremely effective use of overlays which creates a very visually compelling and interesting image. Excellent lighting and tonal quality throughout. Well done. | Honours |
| If I were of the Ocean | A | Felt that the sun (or moon) appears a little too low on the horizon and creates a very slim/flat look to the image. Cropping the right side closer to the paddle boarder creates a slightly stronger image overall. | No award | ||
| Misty Christchurch East | A | Felt there is a little too much in this image which makes it hard to know what to rest your eye on. Using the left 2/3rds makes the white triangular gable with round window a focal point and creats a stronger composition. Well exposed and spotted scene. | No award | ||
| Open to Reconstruction | A | Given the lighting inside the chapel I believe this image would suit a portrait orientation, rather than landscape. The red circle sign on the right fence and stone wall on the right would create interest on both sides and lead the eye more sucessfully around the frame. | No award | ||
| Taking a break | A | Felt that the focus need to be more on the worker in the foreground fo the title to work with the image. The branch intruding between the workes unfortunately also seperates the image into two areas which is not helpful. Cropping down to the worker in the foreground would make a more sucessful image. Good quality lighting and good focus. | No award | ||
| all made up | A | Good attempt at a portrait, felt the upper hand didn’t need to be included and tends to be a bit distracting. Nice even lighting and good focus on the subject. | No award | ||
| Autumn in the Gardens | A | Nice autumn tones and good use of path as a lead in, however not quite strong enough given the other images in comp. Possibly needed another subject or more moody lighting to create stronger effect. | No award | ||
| snapper | A | Good exposure and lighting, nice angle to show the action. A good shot to remember the day. | No award | ||
| Honey for Tea | A | Felt that the honey stick may have worked better if it had been sitting across the top of the honeypot or if a hand could be seen, as it appeared a little off simply jutting into the frame. Lighting could also be stronger to add a more early morning mood. Otherwise nicely taken. | No award | ||
| Orange Dawn | A | A very pretty dawn light however I felt that the city in the background area was a bit lost and not strong enough to use as a focal point area. There may have been a stronger image amongst the tussocks. | No award | ||
| Me first! | A | Nice placement of the birds however I felt this image is a bit on the dark side. The water in this image compared to the other bird on water image is also not as engaging. | No award | ||
| Dew Drops | A | Liked the concept of this image very much but believe it would be stronger to exclude the slightly out of focus areas top and bottom. The simple tones in this image work well if all areas are crisp, however their strength starts to disappear in the out of focus areas. Good exposure. | No award | ||
| Olde Cart | A | The cart in the image is very interesting and has been nicely captured, I felt the inclusion of the grass area and drive didn’t really add to the image and may have been better left out of the scene. A good spot to go back to if you can. | No award | ||
| 10 Shades of Green | A | Really love the concept of this image bit felt the upper part of the plant, which is the most interesting piece has become a bit lost. By comparison the leaf area in the front shows out strongest but has the least interest and detail in it. Good use of a simple background. | No award | ||
| Broken View | A | Nice concept but I felt you needed a more interesting view to make it sucessful. | No award | ||
| Desolate | A | As interesting as old building are they are very difficult to capture well. This is a good attempt with nice moody lighting, however I felt the large tree on the left rather than adding to the image tends to split it in two and your eye jumps between the two halves. Changing angle to try an d exclude it may have worked better, or possibly cropping it out. | No award | ||
| Mirroring | A | Very nice reflection. I didn’t feel it is sucessful as a graphical image however as the colour and tones are too similar throught out and there is no single area that particulary grabs your attention. | No award | ||
| Feather | A | Very nice concept of using a feather on a simple reflective background. Unfortuantely I felt the feather you have chosen is a little on the skimpy side to wrk and balance with the very large area of black. Nicely exposed as relection has been captured well. | No award | ||
| Evening Shadows | A | Really love the lighting and highlights around the vase, butterfly and the back of the table but felt the stripey light on the wall at the upper right drags your eye away from this area. I would suggest cropping in from the left to just past the edge of the table as I felt this creates a stronger image overall. | No award | ||
| Wizened | A | Not sure what the title word means? Love the tones and effect in this image but felt there is no where for your eye to rest on the bright trunk and the trunk also feel squeezed up againt the right edge of the frame. Beautiful lighting and treatment though, would suggest using this again. | No award | ||
| nightfall | A | Lovely backlighting in this image. I believe if you crop down from the top to just above the top yellow circle of light and in from the right to create an equal amount of black as would remain on the top then this image would be worthy of an honours. As it is however the black is too heavy and makes the horse feel it is dropping out of the frame. | No award | ||
| Waipapa Point | A | A very nice sky but I felt there is too much dark at the base of the image. I would either crop off or see if you can pull some detail out of the dark. Nice position of the Lighthouse and sun and good exposure on the sky area. | No award | ||
| Battered | A | An interesting image with good lighting and exposure. I felt the water on the left side needed croped off as it contrasts unsuccessfully with te whispy water in the front and back right area. Really effective lighting on the rock itself. | No award | ||
| winter walk | A | Nice scene but I felt it is a lttle overexposed and would have preferred to have seen more of the perons face. Well done to get the legs of both horse and human lined up. | No award | ||
| Still life | Tabitha | Andrews | B | Wouldn’t wan to eat the fruit in this as it appears to have all gone off!! However it has added texture and additional colours and tones which would have otherwise been missing. Good composition of all the objects and nice lighting. | Accepted |
| Piopiotahi | Alan | Dunscombe | B | A nice scene which has taken on a nice graphical feel given the positioning in the frame. Good exposure on both water and sky adds to this graphic feel. Well lined up and captured. | Accepted |
| Dilapidated Wagon | Sue | Titmuss | B | Nice treatment of the cart and effective softening of the edges of the frame. Soft flat lighting adds to the old feel and look of the image. Nicely done. | Accepted |
| Blue Ice | Alan | Dunscombe | B | Very nicely exposed and well framed image. Positioning of triangular pieces in the ice gives the eye somewhere to rest on in the upper left and lower right thirds of the image and other lines lead the eye around the frame. Exellent job at arrangement exposure and depth of field. | Accepted |
| Vintage power | Sue | Titmuss | B | Nicely captured human interst image. Main subject well placed in the frame and lighting creates interest on the machine itself. A nice tight crop has sucessfully included only those things necessary to make the image a success. | Accepted |
| The Coast. | Lisa | Carter | B | A nice diagonal band of light helps to frame and isolate the rocks in the distance. Plenty of mood in the sky and foreground due to choice of exposure. Well captured. | Accepted |
| Christchurch Art Gallery | Nick | Hampson | B | Stunning image with lovely dark blue sky which adds depth to the other colours and tones in the image. Well lined up architecture and well taken, excellent work. | Honours |
| Farewell Spit Gannet | David | Bayley | B | Brilliant image of a gannet, nicely placed in the frame, excellent exposure and sharpeness throughtout, just stunning. | Honours |
| Man up | Tabitha | Andrews | B | Extremely well cropped to create a high degree of tension between the man on the bike and the child. Quote strong digital effect works sucessfully to add to the tension and drama in the image. | Honours |
| Kaikoura Minimalism | Nick | Hampson | B | A stunning minimalist image. Well composed with the posts connecting the sea and the sky and the choice of shutter speed has sucessfully blended water and sky to a similar appearance. | Honours |
| REAR VIEW | B | Nicely thought out, but felt more of the rear mirror was needed to hold the image together. There is also no particular area or thig for your eye to rest on either. Good exposure though and definately worth another try. | No award | ||
| Scottish heritage Dunvegan Castle | B | Image appears very pixaleted but not in a way that is helpful to the subject. The horizon is also quite crooked. Nice warm lighting. | No award | ||
| Farewell Spit Sand Dunes | B | Given the subject matter and very flat light of the day I felt there was probably a more interesting image within the dunes themselves rather than using the overview of the dunes. Alternately cropping the image to a vertical and using the left side with the person in it creates a bit more tension in the image. | No award | ||
| Birds flying into Sunset Kaikoura | B | The birds in this image appear to have been digiatlly added but without correction of the light on them, as it is not coming from the same direction as the light appears to be coming from. Turning the lower two birds into a black silohette may have been more sucessful. | No award | ||
| Scottish heritage Eilean Castle | B | A nice scene. Quite nice composition of the bridge and castle however the humans appear to be about working out of the frame which tends to take your eye out as well. Good lighting. | No award | ||
| Beach Light | B | Nice ambient light and well exposed. Felt there is a bit too much gap between sticks and sunset as my eye kept jumping between the two areas. | No award | ||
| The Ghostly Trio | B | Good attempt at a digital composition. Needs to be a bit more work done in some areas to blend them against the background e.g. horns on lady on the right and feet of man in the middle. Keep working on it. | No award | ||
| Rib Lines | B | Well spotted scene but the light has not been helpful to you on the day. Switching the sky out or darkening it may add more to the image as would eaarly morning or late evening light. Nicely framed. | No award | ||
| ARDEN FAIRYG | B | The soft lighting on the subject doesn;t sit well with the punchy colours and look of the model, also felt given the expression on the face it would help if she was either looking at the camera or alternately you could see who she was looking at. Nice depth of field and good position on the crop of her body. | No award | ||
| well hello starfish. | B | Foreground would benefit form lightning up either at the time with fill flash or post production by adding and adjustment layer. Rock on the top right is awkwardly placed as there is a light area in the very top right corner which is better removed. Exposure across the rest of image is good. | No award | ||
| The Eastern | Annette | Moran | C | A competant image of a music band in action. Good focus and exposure and good range of expressions on the people. | Accepted |
| Molly | Annette | Moran | C | Competent image of the cat who looks like they are about ready for a nap!! Good exposure and only just enough depth of field. | Accepted |
| Rock Art | Jenny | Leadbetter | C | A good effort and nicely composed image. The clouds sucessfully fill the right hand sky and lead your eye to the rocks on the left. Nicely exposed. | Accepted |
| Harvest nearly over | Brian | Edmunds | C | Hay bales lead our eye into the distance. The two in the right hand front area provide an anchor for the rest of the scene. Did wonder if you need to include all and felt perhaps a trim in form the left may add to the image. | Accepted |
| All the Limestone | Nathan | Green | C | A nicely composed shot. To me it looks a little over exposed but that may just be my screen. Placement of rocks around the frame works very well. | Accepted |
| Morning Fog | Jenny | Leadbetter | C | Simplistic rendition of the scene which works very well with the subject matter. Birds add interest and detail to the foreground. Nice image. | Accepted |
| Punting on the Avon | Carolyn | Cosgrove | C | Nice candid portrait of a punter at work. Good framing and nice exposure. The pole sucessfully connects the light area of the sky to the darker area of water and the trees on either side add colour and life to the image. | Accepted |
| Red Tailed Black Cockatoo in Flight | Amy | Boyce | C | Excellent shot of a bird in flight. Birds sitting in background add a sense of location. Bird in flight is extremely crisp and well exposed, so well done. | Honours |
| F18 Super Hornet | Martin | Kircher | C | Very successful image. The heat from the engines has created a filter like effect which in turn creates a sense of heat and motion. Well cropped into an interesting square shape which suits the overall feel. Excellent work. | Honours |
| Avon River Boats | C | There are undoubtedly several different images within this frame but trying to include them all at once means the image has not been sucessful. When confronted with a scene like this it is usually best to simply and focus on a smaller area of either colour or shapes rather than inlcude it all. | No award | ||
| Cactus Flower | C | Placement of the catus in the frame is quite sucessful, howevere the back of the catus appears more in focus tan the front area which is unfortunate as this draws your eye away from the flower. Reasonably well exposed to ensure detail remains in the whites. | No award | ||
| into the wind | C | Felt this image would benefit from cropping out all the birds on the left so only the group of 5 on the right remain. Well exposed and good range of action amongst the birdlife. | No award | ||
| Rugged beauty | C | Consider the left 1/3rd of this image is not needed and distracts away from the lovely exposure on the waterfal. I would also trim a little off the right edge also to remove the rock in the dark. Great exposure on the waterfall itself. | No award | ||
| Piwakawaka | C | Quite like the effect that has been applied to this iamge but consider the stick on the left would be better removed as it has quite a different look and feel than the rest of the image. Otherwise nicely composed and good range of colours and tones. | No award | ||
| Cave Stream | C | Quite like the arrangement of this scene but it felt just a bit too bland. I did wonder if a longer shutter speed with the water would have added some useful contrast to the scene as a whole. | No award | ||
| Leucadendron | C | Unfortunately the centre of this bulleye image is out of focus and creates a distraction rather than adds to the effect. Colours and exposure of them have been handled very well. Water droplets also add some interest. | No award | ||
| Mauria Springs | C | Image appears a bit pixalated and not in a way that enhances it. Possibly a longer shutter speed would have added more interest to the water, although there are some very nice deep colours in the image. | No award | ||
| Walking the dog | C | Felt this image is a little too dark and the light coming through the trees is a little too weak for the image to be sucessful as some others in the comp. May improve if post edit on computer is possible. | No award | ||
| View from the 20th Floor | C | Felt this image needed either more dramatic lighting or a more graphical feel to it to be more than a nice memory of your travels. Framing is quite sucessfull but is just lacking a little oomph | No award | ||
| Kolea ( Pacific Golden Plover) | C | Nice image of the bird but there is far too much burnt out white in the frame, which should be easy to crop off. Bird itself has been handled well but is a bit lost in all the brightness of its surroundings. | No award |
