Dawn Shoot Christchurch City

Date:   Sunday 16th August 2020

Time:   Meet at 7:00 am Outside 160 Lichfield Street Car Parking Building.  Parking is available nearby in Lichfield St., or in the Parking building at $3.00 per hour. Note the foot entrance to the car parking building is from Ash Street at the rear, take lift to floor 14 at roof level.

Sunrise detail. Sun rise is at 7:22am. At 72 degrees East.

Why dawn in the City?    In the last 5 years we have focused on the seascapes at dawn. However a City has much to work with – buildings, graffiti, debris, rivers, glass, the odd person, roads, and greenery in the midst of all of this urban-ness. The possibilities to create unique photos are endless. So, if you combine all this intense city landscape with the wonderful and quickly-changing light of dawn, you have an amazing combination.

Proposed programme:

Take lift to 14th floor of the Parking building. Sunrise in the east. Surrounding view 360 degrees with tall city buildings in the west receiving early morning light. Further away Port hills. This site will be best if clouds are present on the day. After the initial sunrise we may form smaller groups to explore opportunities.

Lichfield, Cashel and Hereford streets run east west at 62 degrees, so an hour or so following sunrise the sun will be visible at a low level along the streets. Check out the glass faced buildings.

Barbados St Cemetery 384 Barbadoes St. established 1851. Has possibilities.

For a while the sun will be visible on the features such as high rise buildings and the bridge of remembrance. Depending on conditions a walk up the Avon from Manchester St. to the Hospital may be worthwhile.

Breakfast/ coffee are available at Black Bettys, 165 Madras Street from 8am.

What to bring:

  • Your Camera
  • A small torch (flashlight) for setting up your camera in the dark
  • A plastic bag for my camera in case it rains (cheap but it works!)
  • A visor or hat as walking into the sunlight is hard on the eyes
  • Gloves (it’s often cold at dawn, even in summer)
  • A light, but sturdy tripod, (you’ll need this for the first couple of hours, but then you’ll be carrying it, hence it should be light)
